As part of the work undertaken to build community capability and capacity, Venture Southland is supporting the HATA initiative.

After a series of Hui held in 2015 to focus on community concerns around alcohol, the HATA, Healthy Attitudes Towards Alcohol, initiative was established.

To champion HATA, and the actions required to make change, a range of key stakeholders have come together to work collaboratively on initiatives that aim to change Southland's drinking culture.

Key partners for the initiative include:

  • ACC
  • Healthy Families Invercargill
  • Nga Kete Matauranga Pounamu Charitable Trust
  • Venture Southland
  • Invercargill City Council
  • Gore District Council
  • Southland District Council
  • Police and Emergency Services
  • Mataura Licensing Trust
  • Invercargill Licensing Trust
  • Invercargill Youth Council
  • Sport Southland
  • Rugby Southland
  • Southern District Health Board
  • Road Safety Southland
  • Stopping Violence
  • Adventure Development
  • Safe in the South
  • WellSouth
  • Health Promotion Agency
  • Local secondary schools
  • Local sports clubs
  • Local event organisers

Through HATA, alcohol action teams have been tasked with addressing the issue of hazardous drinking in the south including looking at youth binge drinking, the impact of this for whanau, hazardous drinking at Southland venues and events and Southland's overall drinking culture.

It is important to note that no one organisation owns this project, rather it is a coordinated approach with community partners providing support where appropriate to encourage healthy attitudes towards alcohol.

The success of this initiative relies strongly on community involvement and support.

if you would like to get involved please contact Cassandra Pokoney, the Communications Advisor at Healthy Families or 03 211 2150.

Venture Southland's involvement

Venture Southland is a partner in this programme as it aligns with the work programme to develop and promote Southland as an attractive place in which to live, study, work, visit and do business.

This includes providing advice and resources to the community to deliver quality offerings such as events and other initiatives that help to maintain a proud Southland Community Spirit.
