Venture Southland helps to develop and implement regional strategies that enhance the lifestyle opportunities for all Southlanders. Listed below are some of key regional strategies for Southland.

Southland Regional Development Strategy

The Southland Mayoral Forum commissioned the Southland Regional Development Strategy in 2014. The strategy was intended to unify the regional development effort and to provide a clear analysis of the economic, social and community based issues affecting the Southland region. This was publicly presented in November 2016.


Southland Digital Strategy

The Southland Digital Strategy was developed in 2015 incorporating an updated Digital Strategy, a review of the progress against the 2008 strategy and a digital enablement plan. The strategy is based upon the belief that digital connectivity drives community and economic development throughout Southland. The strategy has goals, actions and plans under the three main sections of Connection, Capability and Content.


Catlins Tourism Strategy

In 2013, Catlins Coast Inc and Tourism Catlins Charitable Trust approached Venture Southland with a request to review the 2004 Catlins Tourism Strategy. As a result of this request the Catlins Tourism Strategy 2016-2026 was developed. This strategy was designed to encourage and enable tourism growth alongside  protecting and preserving The Catlins community, wildlife and environment. The strategy suggested six target goals which will encourage this growth to be achieved.


Southern New Zealand Cruise Destination Strategy

The Southern New Zealand Cruise Destination Strategy was developed in 2016 and recommended that a framework for this strategy should be further developed and adopted by key regional stakeholders. The strategy confirmed that Venture Southland would be recommended as the lead organisation in the implementation of this strategy alongside its other destination promotion activities.


Southland Aquaculture Strategy

Venture Southland has helped in the preparation of a region-wide strategy for Aquaculture in Southland.

The strategy aims to provide high-level guidance on new aquaculture opportunities, allowing development to proceed in a planned, coordinated manner that integrates well with other uses and values. The strategy also identifies practical ways in which some of the costs and risks of investing in aquaculture can be reduced on a region-wide basis. The Southland Aquaculture Strategy gives all those with an interest in aquaculture development – whether marine or land-based – an outline of the opportunities available in Aquaculture.


Southland Regional Labour Market Strategy 2014-2031

The Labour Market Strategy outlines a plan of action for the Southland region to increase workforce numbers across the four main groups of: Young workers, Older workers, Female workers and Migrant workers. The recommended actions to help increase numbers across these groups falls into the four main areas of Attraction, Retention, Upskilling and Utlillisation. The 2015 strategy reaffirms the major objectives of the 2008 predecessor but further develops the plans that should be adopted for the strategy to succeed. 


Southland Energy Strategy - 2011

The Southland energy strategy outlines the opportunities for Southland with regards to energy generation, storage and use, based on a review of the region‘s 2003 Energy Strategy. The strategy is aimed at identifying the opportunities and associated risks associated with different energy options for all stakeholders. The implementation of the suggested initiatives is reliant on the collective actions of a wide range of stakeholder groups, as well as sourcing funding for the initiatives.


Sustainable Business in Southland Strategy 2008

The sustainable business in Southland strategy provided guidelines for the implementation of a project that was aimed at achieving maximum uptake of sustainable practices by Southland businesses, and identifying any gaps between the needs of Southland businesses and the existing support available to encourage this sustainability.
