Planning is underway to establish and share a unified message of Southand’s Identity.

Central to any attraction and retention initiative is the development of a story that strongly articulates the identity of a place and what makes it unique.

To encourage this in Southland Venture Southland is facilitating the development of the Southland Story project which was identified as an immediate priority in the Southland Regional Development Strategy Action Plan.

The project will identify what it means to be a Southlander, encourage people to be proud of living in Southland and contribute to attracting more people to the region.

An advisory group has been established to work alongside independent consultants from Principals consulting to ensure the story development process is inclusive and representative of Southland.

Progress to date

Consultation workshops have been carried out across the region in Te Anau, Riverton, Gore and Invercargill, giving people the opportunity to share their views on what makes Southland unique.

Over 150 were able to participate in the consultation and a wider survey has been launched in an attempt to gather more voices to contribute to the story development.

The survey can be accessed here

What the story will be used for

The Southland Story will provide an umbrella messaging framework and a set of tools local businesses, councils and organisations can apply to their own marketing and communications

This will help promote the best aspects of the region and drive consistency in the messaging used to promote Southland as a great place to live, work, visit and do business.

It is anticipated that the project will be completed by early 2019 and will be used across Southland's retention, investment, recruitment, destination promotion and management programmes.
